I agree. This is ridiculous, it's like telling you "don't write too much, don't THINK too much for that matter". What about the relics among us who are not satisfied by communication with friends that comprises of 2 words per line and want to exchange valuable information from time to time? So you write your thoughts for like 5-10 minutes, whatever, and at some point the client hits a limit and won't write any more characters. Fine, you delete the last incomplete sentence and hit enter. Should work, right? EEEK, WRONG. Because you've exceeded the character limit of petty 2000 waaaaaaay back, but nothing in the program bothered to inform you of that. If the developers are so keen on the character limit (although it's ridiculous), at least they could add a character count so that we can effin *know* where that limit is and when we've crossed it. Though to be honest, it isn't their job to determine how I'm going to communicate with my friends and whether it's nice of me to write walls of text to them or not. I write long. Many people write long, and that should NOT be discouraged, because it's often a matter of intelligence. For the record, none of my friends has ever complained.

I would love the limit raised to 10k or 20k if it needs a limit at all.

What I think would be a helpful solution to the 2,000 character limit would be a toggle in settings for the server. If the admins of the server don't want it on, they can turn it off. If they do, they can leave it on. Have it auto-enabled, or auto-disabled when a new server is created. Or make it even more specific than that and have it be specific to channels or sections--some customization would be really nice because not everyone uses Discord for gaming chat.

@Leotomas -- I don't think you fully understood what was going on. Some of us use Discord for text-based role play. That means we're writing stories, and a part of a story can easily get up to 2000k characters. I had a look at pastebin to see what it was about, and it doesn't seem to be what we want. The point of using Discord for us is for the chat feature, among other things, a feature that pastebin doesn't have. I also use Google Docs with my friend from Discord, and that works, but for various reasons, including the fact that Google Docs doesn't work very well on either of our phones, we prefer Discord for some scenarios. Please don't tell us we're doing things wrong just because we're using Discord differently than you do.

@sawayoshi so if it's a technical thing why do they say the limit is "to be courteous". Like just say its a technical thing

I would agree, however I believe this should be an option for servers to enable/disable. And for the limit in DMs, perhaps an option in settings?

I do a message of the Day on the server I Admin.  I regularly have to split my messages as they are like the daily paper every morning.  Not too ling but over 2,000 characters, couldn't you set it to Admins/Owers by default and let assign who can or what roles can?  That would be great.  Thanks.

@trojaner ... "Spam" would be multiple messages being posted, which this suggestion would do away with.

As someone who administrates a Discord server with a server rules and server "F.A.Q." section, and who does not want to make every little rule or "F.A.Q." thing separate messages (especially as that'd make it troublesome to add a new rule above the "F.A.Q." section), I feel that a 2000 character limit is hindering.

While 2000 may or may not be enough for an "average" user (by which I mean "not an administrator"), I have a full-on administrator role. Surely a server administrator should be allowed to have 65535 characters (or 65000 characters) or such per message? (Such a specific number because that that's about as much as an unsigned 16-bit integer would allow as a character count number; More than that would be even better, of course, but probably not worth it to go beyond 16 bits for.)

Definitely want to add to this topic here. Many people had already brought it up but I just feel like saying it once again.

The Roleplay and Writer communities are h u g e and having to constantly double or even triple post to get a proper response out can hurt at times. Especially when thinking back on when I had used Skype and such a short limit did not exist.

Discord has many perks and is overall superior to Skype in any way, imo. But the almost stupidly short character limit has become a main nuisance ever since I had switched over to it.

I do not know about Discord's limitations or anything, how all of that works out, how data is allocated and all of that jazz... but does it provide any benefits to keep the character limit this low? From a technical standpoint I mean, then I guess I would understand why things are how they are.

For now tho... lemme be a disgruntled man crying out for more characters per post! Woo!

They're going to remove this ticket and "combine it with another" that's months old to be "organized." So they dont have to look at all the tickets asking for this.

Please, Discord. People have been asking for this for literal years.

    I disagree.
Google docs would become a big mess with multiple people writing on the same pages, while being in different locations. It doesn't give a good option to talk outside the rp, share picture, share memes etc. Google docs also become way too laggy the more pages are made. And by now we're probably exceeded 100 pages by now looking at how much we've written inside Discord.
I think discord is a perfect way to do rp's with big groups. We have the server split up into channel categories, telling us what region it is in the world we rp in. Those categories open up to several different location channels. This way people can rp in a certain location with eachother and they won't have to worry about other people chatting their own story in between. No one chatting through eachother.
Next to that we have OOC channels where people can post the regular things, talk to eachother, post pictures, art and memes. We even have plotting channels, which help discussing the stories we create.
If Discord adds the option for the server owner and possibly mods to choose which channel has a character limit or not, people can post their rp stories without having to cut it all up into parts, similar like adding a slow mode or not. It's not that dificult for them to do.

Yes, however; there are other ways you can bypass and make server rules. You can use the API and make a bot that sends an embed or multiple embeds to the specified channel (by ID). Or, you can post it as a Google doc if you plesse.

I do like the idea of a 3000 message character limit, but I doubt it'd get added because there are so many loopholes.

Hey as much as I think this would be an awesome idea think about those messages from self bots that aren't asked for being limited to 2000 chars as it is is too much so giving them the power to send an unlimited size message could make for a very very bad time. Like they may just send a hex encoded video file as a message which probably would be in excess of a trillion characters. I'd be pissed. But your specific request I.e a fandom fanfic or short novel would be nice. Maybe have the option to allow users to send you higher rates than auto on? So I could say your allowed to send be a spiel 10k chars long as I trust your not spamming me..

I think this would be a really nifty feature although Discord probably has a reason for having a character limit. If there is really no reason though, I think this would be a great addition!

Alexis, maybe someone wants a channel for long rants, or sharing stories, but wants links disabled and file sharing.

This would be a cool feature that can't be abused that badly as it wouldn't flood notifications

@regtable: even if you got a trillion character message, that may be super annoying, but it is not harmful.

the worst part is that there is no character counter, so at some point, the text gets cut off when you paste it, but it cuts it off at more than 2,000 characters, so you remove a few more characters and still get an error about the limit. it is a poor user experience.

server operators should have the option to increase or disable the limits, period.

@remedy I don't want to have to open my browser, navigate to a web page, paste it into a web page and then drop the link in chat. I just want my text to be in chat.
(For now though, thanks for the link.)

@remedy and @Avis, I think the main issue is that while there are many websites and other systems to allow exchanging large amounts, we just don’t want to. In many cases it would just be much easier if we could send the messages in Discord

I'm adding this comment in the hopes this will be heard by the discord devs.

please add options to adjust character limit.... PLEASE

mainly for the same reasons as listed above.

This would be great for our office as well since we like to group database updates into one message

It would be a great idea.

My bot has to include many hyperlinks in embed descriptions, but the 2048 characters limit is really annoying. Splitting the text into more messages cause the bot hitting the rateo limit (5 messages / 5 seconds), that's even more uncool.

Come on Discord, make this possible! I would even purchase Nitro just for that.

I absolutely agree! Mine is the same, and we have the same problem. We're constantly having to split our replies into more than one message so as to stay within the character limit, and it's frustrating. If the admin had the option to choose whether to enforce a character limit and/or how much the character limit was, that would be awesome. Thanks!

ok if you hit 2k it's whaever but if you're hitting 2000k then there's a problem

To the extent of my understanding, this is a technical thing, and is in place for the same reason you can only upload 50/100 emotes: server overload. Any longer and it becomes a big burden on the servers to keep messages that long. (correct me if i'm wrong btw, i don't actually know)

Oh, okay. That's entirely possible :) I mean I don't know enough about it to understand why 2 1000k-character messages are different than 1 2000k-character message, but yeah haha. Thanks for saying that! I would like to hear from Discord themselves whether that's the case, but it seems to me like it's entirely possible you're right haha

    👍

math trivia: k = 1000, so if you're saying 2000k that actually means 2 million. just thought it might be helpful for you to know that
