@Leotomas I use Markdown to format my posts and announcements on my server. If im constantly using ***___ TEXT ___*** for each heading, I am going to quickly eat through the character limit.

@Leotomas Pastebin/Hastebin is a very bad idea. It's an external website, so you'll have to rely on both Discord and Pastebin to be up, not to mention if you accidentally set an expiry (not that most people would) the paste will be permanently gone. Plus, it's not like Discord can't handle that much data - as others have said, the limit is 8MB/50MB for files (i.e. 8 million characters/50 million) - admittedly long messages will make search much slower, so I'd say a good alternative is for Discord to automatically turn long messages into text file attachments - that way you can add a caption to make it easier to search, and Discord doesn't have to worry about a ton of text slowing down their search system

@somebody I think that auto creating a text file is a great idea. Or even making this text file creation thing a sort of separate but builtin thing (so people don’t wonder why their message suddenly became a text file) sort of like snippets from Slack but just markdown text that’s not editable later (or maybe it could be but I think that would be harder to implement). As long as these files can be read on all devices without downloading anything

Agreed....this is 2019....not 1999. We don't use dial up anymore.

We can exceed the old UUNet character limit without issue these days.

Please. The low character limit is super frustrating.

I switched from Slack to Discord because Slack sucks so much about code (syntax highlighting, etc).

But since I'm on discord, I saw that there's a limit of 2000 characters which is way too low when you share some code.

    Please increase this size, thanks.

Unless there’s a glaring problem with doing this, I too would like to have the character limit increase beyond two thousand.

You're not alone, I'm a writer as well and I'd LOVE to see this implemented. Would be super useful when not getting limited by characters

I don't know if that's cool but I'm too lazy to check so +1

I'd love that, but only as an option that you have to turn on for specific channels.

    Just send another message?

+1 I agree with this one -- Sending another message is fine most of the time but on mobile it becomes a struggle (and, yes, I have reached 2k characters replying to stuff on mobile). Even just doubling to 4k I think would be fine. Unless, like Dr. Extinction said there's a glaring problem with doing it.

Neb, that’s easier said that done. If you on PC, copy and paste and image, then write over 2,000 characters about said image or what it means. Discord will tell you the message was too long and delete the whole thing.

Imagine losing twenty minutes of brainstorming, four of five paragraphs, just because you were on a hot-streak thinking about your cool ideas.

Can’t send a second message with twice the -2001/2000 characters I just lost.

You’re most likely right. And people need to just keep making tickets to this effect every time. Rather than ignoring what clearly a lot of people want, they should act on it. It’s been asked for, for years. (I know cause I commented my support on a similar thread years ago). At this point, not delivering is simply stubbornness I think.

This needs to happen. The 2k character limit is too small.

This feature should be available to the nitro boosted servers for example. It is really annoying to edit back the server rules.. in my case. I don't understand why this feature is not added under some conditions..

Было-бы круто чтобы расширили возможности то хочется оформить красиво и люди не понимают этого почему так.          It would be cool to expanded possibilities you want to make nice and people don't understand why.

I think it’s important to remember that this isn’t just an issue in servers. DMs shouldn’t have a limit either. Or you should be able to change a setting in account management to have the limit either on or off. Or at LEAST a setting to allow or disallow a limit when getting messages from friends. (Similar to allowing stranger messages or not.) I only am in one server and the issue isn’t there but when I am privately talking to friends we run into it nearly every time. It’s not being mindful to others when we have to break one message up 2 or 3 times.

Everyone commenting on this should make another thread, they can't ignore it that way.

This is really important! I'm so excited for a potential increase, whether it's to 5k or 20k, but I'm definitely agreeing with the high hopes : )

Same, Suiqune. My face was broken eons ago from the constant impromptu meetings with the limit, which is not the sky.

I agree, character limits should definitely be increased to something like 20,000; however, I feel that 200 for nicknames is a bit excessive. Maybe just double it (64 characters)?

I am also continually at war with the 2000 character limit.

Making announcements as a Server Admin is rather frustrating when longer messages and posts need to be broken up into chunks so they can be released, and then must be posted in quick succession.

I wholly agree that it would be useful to have the ability to assign the higher limit via permissions rather than having it be a blanket hand-out to all users as you can guarantee it will get abused gratuitously.

My other frustration is that the 2000 character count is often inaccurate... so if that could be fixed at least, that'd be great.

    Username,

Maybe it is a bit excessive to some people but I know a lot of people (including myself) that like the idea of being able to have silly longer nicknames and we can't really do that. Keep in mind that Discord includes spaces as characters.

    Timothysboxers,

I definitely feel that. I think the main reason it's often inaccurate is because it counts spaces as characters, but I could be wrong. If it's inconsistently inaccurate that would be.... very irritating.

I find the only way to reasonably do longer messages is to put it all into google docs, section it to appropriate length, and then post it in rapidly which is a hugely annoying process and very unreliable, especially if you're posting in a channel other people can post in. Ugh.

I also really agree with the idea that we could section off who can and can't type that much. Being able to limit it to people of importance / trusted individuals will also help lessen the strain on Discord's servers.

    Trusty McCoolGirl,

While it irks me, I hadn't bothered testing it.

For the sake of science, I did just carry out a few scenarios and what I can advise is that Discord seems to count the end of line/paragraph mark as a character (where word/gdocs do not—though they do show character count with and without spaces). A space is a character, so I had expected that to be included in the count. Technically speaking, so is the end of paragraph mark, and if you really want to get into it, it could count for two characters: Carriage return and Line feed.

So in a situation where you are posting multi-paragraph messages or attempting to do a nicely formatted post, this will eat into the character count that you have available to use. So, if you—like most of us do—use word or gdocs to prepare posts, then the difference in the manner in which characters are counted may lead to you having a bad time.

I feel less annoyed about it now and modify my earlier complaint about it being inaccurate—downgrading it to merely being inconsistent with typical methods for character counting via word or gdocs.
