Screen sharing & Video Calls D September 11, 2018 00:41 Updated Follow In addition to being a pretty sweet voice & text chat app, Discord can offer you and up to 9 of your closest compadres an equally awesome video and screen sharing experience. Woah. Totally. With both screen sharing and video calling, we saw an opportunity to use them side-by-side in a seamless manner. Instead of having to jump all over the place to switch from one to the other, they're available simultaneously anytime you have a video call enabled! Before we dive in, let's get everything all setup and ready to go. Getting Started In your user settings page, you'll find a handy "Voice & Video" tab, where you can adjust your settings for voice and video chat. As long as you have a video device available, you'll be able to select it from the camera options dropdown: In case of cold feet, you can click the handy "Test Video" button to make sure everything's shipshape and your hair is done just right before making first contact with your friends. Note for browser app users: You may need to enable camera access in your browser in order to use the device successfully. You'll get this handy popup if Discord senses troubles there... Just click the "Allow" button that comes up, and you'll be good to go here. Add Friends, Rinse, Repeat Now that we're camera-ready and rearing to go, the next step is to pop open a private or group DM with the folks we're looking to video chat with. You can start a video call directly here. Check out the Video icon up in the header next to the search text box: All the Gizmos and Gadgets Now that we're here- there's a few different bits and pieces to maneuver through to get the most out of our face-to-face conversation stuff. Let's break it down: 1. Video / Screen share swap: These icons will switch your main view from video calling to screen sharing. You can hot-swap between the two mid call! When selecting screen share, you'll get a few options of what exactly you'd like to send your friends' way: You can either choose which of your screens you'd like to share (yes, even for multiple monitors), or even a specific application window! Side note: You can switch between application and screen views by clicking the screen share icon again when already screen sharing. Basically, use this button to do anything screen share when... You're ready to screen share. 2. Expand Down: When in a video call, you can expand the view down so the video takes up the maximum height you've set for Discord. 3. Video Marquee: When you click a user from the normal view, they'll become in focus leaving the marquee on the right. By clicking on a particular window, you'll zoom in their feed to the main window. 4. User Settings: Like the icons next to your avatar in the bottom left-hand corner of the app, you can access the self-mute and user settings tab functions in the video window as well. 5. Full Screen Toggle: Clicking this icon will expand the video call to full screen regardless of which view you're using. When full screen, clicking either the view selector or collapse icon will return to your normal view. You can also press Esc to do this as well! We also know that multitasking is an important part of video calling. If you switch to other DMs or servers while in a video call, the video feed will pop to a picture-in-picture view that you can drag around your screen for maximum convenience: You'll be able to access your video options by clicking the icons in the lower left-hand corner of the floating video. To zoom back to the call in progress, click the username list within the video in the top left. Sound Hook/Sound Share AND NOW....you can also share your audio while you screenshare! When you share a specific window only, you'll need to toggle the Sound Toggle for the sound share feature to work! (If you don't see the toggle, the feature isn't available for that application!) If you're having some issues sharing your favorite tunes with your friends, try the following steps: Double check your Antivirus (AV) programs just in case your AV has flagged our app! If Discord isn't flagged in your AV program, try temporarily disabling the AV completely and see if that helps! Test out your audio settings and try some general troubleshooting following the steps here! Reinstall the app completely using the nifty tips in this article! And if all of the above didn’t work, take some screenshots of your screenshare and voice settings, let us know what apps you're trying to sound share with, and forward that information to the team to look into further at https://dis.gd/contact! Note: This feature is currently only available on the Windows desktop client! It is not available on macOS, the browser, or mobile client! That wraps up all of the screen sharing goodness in Discord.
