How does one create the sub-channels? I've googled it and read through this a couple times and I'm not finding it.

@Malvis what issue are you having? The voice sub channels are regular channels dragged in between the "main" channels. They're all created the same way, but the ones with the blocks next to them don't allow users to connect.

@Cilantrelle If I drag them in between, they just get moved up/down.

@Malvis that sounds about right. You just reposition the sub channels so they're underneath the main channels.

@Cilantrelle I will have to apologize myself, I thought it were sub-channel as in, open a main channel (using the drop down arrow) and the sub channels get visible. Wanted to use it to hide/unhide certain channels so it doesn't get too intense in terms of amounts of channels. Feel free to delete my questions, as I totally misunderstood the sub-channels :)

@Malvis No worries! We know in-depth functioning sub-channels are highly requested (seriously, check out feedback.discordapp.com... I think it's the most requested feature on there), so you'll see those as soon as we can get them polished and ready to go. This approach to them is just a little different. If you have any other questions, I'll be happy to help. =]

Is it okay to use games/tv shows/ movie names as a server name? i think it would be under impersonation someone, but as rather something.

@Plazma Tornado Totally! Your servers are all your own to edit and customize. Go wild!

@Aoi that sounds like audio input issues. Try checking out the steps in the "where'd my audio input go" article, then shoot us a support ticket if you're still having issues.

Just to comment, this seems to be a terrible hack to make up for a missing feature. Could we just have proper nested sub-channels as well which we could nicely apply hierarical permissions/roles to and dish out invites for?

@Velyks sorry you think so. =[ Sub channels have a lot of popularity behind them over at feedback.discordapp.com, and we've definitely taken it into note. This is just a little substitute based on another server some friends of ours worked up until we get the real thing up and running. Patience, young padawan. =]

We need to be able to create Sub-Channels WITHIN the Main Channels. That includes clicking on the Main channel to Hide/Reveal Sub-Channels created within the Main Channel. It is a CRITICAL feature for people who play a variety of MMORPGs, and have set communities on those games separately. It makes life easier.

This was a nice temp fix for the sub channel request thanks a ton for that :) I have another question. I run a pretty big multi-game community and my members often jump between games. So I created different channels and sub channels for our most popular games. I then created roles for each game and controlled the permissions that way. I LOVE the ability to break up who's online by what game they are playing. But this only shows who's online and sorts them by what role is highest on the priority list. I'd love the ability to marry games to roles or even more simply an option to sort listed players by what they are currently playing. (The latter option seems a WHOLE lot easier to implement on the back end now that I think about it). Is there a way to do this already? Is this in the works? THANKS! We are currently running a small pilot group of select players from each chapter of our community to try this out. If it ends up working out for us and we can somehow embed it into our Enjin site we will be making Discord our official voice platform :) Hope to see you guys at PAX.

@Sir Ace that's really awesome! I think sorting users by current game playing would be really cool. Be sure to catch us in the LAN lounge at PAX south, and make sure you bring up your idea to whoever you meet. We'll look forward to seeing you there!

I was trying to follow along on this guide pretty close to permission by permission BUT the welcome landing page doesn't seem to want to work as described. When I set the permissions to only allow read it locked me out from the channel entirely. Even though I was an admin the @everyone tag seemed to take precedent.

yes but you cant delete channels you've created wy can we not delete channels???

  • Avatar
    Dyingrain

@Lunasa Acoinna yes you can, there's also a guide to that on there as well, but it's in the overview of the individual channels settings the only channel we can't delete is the #general channel in the text channels, that's there by default

@Cilantrelle How do we get a custom domain name for the invite like instead of the discord link u type in www.example.co how do u do that?

How do i add a little avatar/photo kind of thing next to my voice channel, ive seen it on other servers. How do i to do it?

  • Avatar
    Cilantrelle

@Emproxx We don't quite have custom invite link URLs just yet, but you can use something 3rd party to do something similar.

@Wanni Those are Unicode characters! You can use those freely when editing a text/voice channel title.

Is there any way to make certain roles immune to other roles? Such as if I created the server, the admins in my server can still mute and deafen me, is there any way I can set up a hierarchy so that roles under other roles can't affect those higher roles?

  • Avatar
    Cilantrelle

@melbow As the server owner, even if you get muted / deafened in a channel, you should be able to unmute yourself just because you're the owner. We don't have "immunities" to protect higher roles from lower ones yet, but it's something we're looking into.

It's to bad that we already waited half a year for real subchannels(most requested) and got a friendsystem 💩.

I don't want sub channels. I hate the idea of someone being able to be in the header "channel" - collapsible channel groups would be much more useful. I can't imagine this would be too difficult to implement. But then, I don't know. It might need to be a client side thing.

Having some kind of organization, not just for voice channels, but text channels as well, would be wonderful. Assigning text channels to voice channels, in that a user has to be in a specific text channel to use a specific voice channel would be nice (Then we can manage users from the channel roles)

Being able to have nested roles (assign a role to another role) would be wonderful as well. Then I could assign my "Staff" moniker role to the 4 staff roles (Discord Admin, Server Admin, Moderator, Helper) and each would be listed - I could even add permissions for voice and text channels to the "Staff" role instead of each of the 4 staff roles. If I want to be able to give all staff the right to ban, I give it to the moniker role, and not to each of the main roles. This is as opposed to the method of giving each user both roles. I would rather give each user one role and be able to manage those roles independantly while being assured any specific user will have the permissions of their staff role as well as the Staff moniker role. This would also be used for "Donators", where "Gold, Platinum, Diamond" etc could be the groups. Why would I want to give someone "Donator" and "Gold" - and yet not want to manage 3 groups after I've set them up.

And the last gripe I have about it all is the inability for users to select which text channels they're in. Muting channels is one thing, but not being in the channel all together is almost a requirement for some people. We have players who are not interested in our PvP servers or our Collaborative servers and only want to be in channels with other PvE/survivalist players, or those interested in just creative/free-roam chat. This would also allow us to more easily have a "mature" text channel. Having users join the server in a single "entry" channel and then inviting them, or allowing them to choose which channels they wish to participate in - and then also be able to depart from - would be wonderful.

Yes, I understand I can make a moniker role of "Mature" and assign both text and voice channels to allow entry only to those with the Mature role. And I may be doing that, but it seems like something that should be handled less by roles and more by channel management.

There, that's my 2 cents, and half a jug a of milk as well.

I know some of my thoughts about Discord seem odd, and maybe it's the 20 years of IRC, ICQ, AIM, TS2, TS3, Mumble, BBSes, Forums, and numerous multi-player games that have moulded what I expect of a chat system. And maybe those are specifically reasons why you're doing something different. But, cobbled together server management isn't awesome and, honestly, users will put up with it for only so long with promises of fixes and enhancements "coming soon" before abandonment starts to happen. I like Discordapp and I want to see it succeed as well as possible. And though things, as mentioned above with the friends system, are nice things to have, having management frameworks that actually work is also important.

Regardless, even if I have to jump through a few hoops to lock down text channels, the permission (roles) system on Discord is lightyears better than TS3's monstrosity of BS.
