Let's keep this short and sweet. To add someone to your friends list, open it up in your client window:
Click the awesome blurple button labeled add friend:
You'll see a small pop up window with a text box. Should look like this:
So Many Options!
Did you know there's a few different ways to add your friends? We'll take a look at both, so you can choose what floats your boat.
1.Username & DiscordTag:
If you want to add someone based on their username, you can use that window we found in the in friends list.
HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART.
Adding your buddy via DiscordTag requires 3 key parts. Make sure you enter their:
1. Full Username (This is case sensitive!)
2. "#" character (fun fact: the name for this character is "octothorpe")
3. DiscordTag (4 digits)
When you mix these all together, in that specific order, you should get something that looks like this:
HelpyHelpnotbot#8877
Once you've done that, You'll either get a Green message telling you your request was successfully sent, or a Red message telling you something didn't work. If the request didn't send properly, but sure to double check all the steps and enter it again! We believe in you. =]
2.Profile Button
Alternatively, a super awesome easy way to add your buddy on the fly is to find the add request directly in their profile. Check out how simple this is:
A. Right click their avatar either in the user list or in the chat window:
B. Click the Profile button:
C. Click the big green button!
3.Right-Click Bonanza
Even cooler: If you travel just a bit further down the right-click menu, you'll see the option to add your buddy directly in the menu. One click and you're good to go!

@Nathus214 Can you double check any mutual servers that you were in and see if they're in there?
@netkeeper Sorry fam! If you'd like to see changes to the friending system in the future, help vote up the suggestions at feedback.discordapp.com!
I just figured out. You must add CapiTals if the UserName has it.
It's CHARACTER sensitive.
There should be an option that you can search only with username.
You guys should add a thing so you don't have to look someone up just by their tag, you can look up their normal names without tag. If i want to find a friend, but don't know his discord and have no communication with him, how the hell do you expect me to find him.
what does outgoing friend request mean
I wish I could send a friend a link, it takes them to discord and ask them if they want to add me as a friend. That would be so much easier.
@proose outgoing friend means a friend request you have sent to someone else.
@Finsku @Ice Usernames are not unique in the system currently, ex there can be tons of users with the name "Pikachu", but you won't know which "Pikachu" is the one you're looking for unless you know their numbers! This is why you need both the numbers and the username in order to find the correct user. If you'd like to see changes in the system though, feel free to vote it up at feedback.discordapp.com!
@BetaLeaf.net Currently the best option would be to directly search their Discord tag, but I'd give that feature idea an upvote over at feedback.discordapp.com!
@proose Yup! @BetaLeaf.net is spot on! An outgoing friend request is a friend request you have sent to someone else.
To @ellolizard. I can't send a friend request to my friend's discord account, and he isn't blocking me, and it keeps saying that it's spelled wrong when it's not. So what do I do?
@epicguy900015 Could you send over a screenshot of the error message, and a screenshot of your friend's user profile to support@discordapp.com and we'll be able to isolate the issue from there!
How do I add a friend if I just have their username and not their 4-digit number code?
Seems a bit backwards that you can get friend suggestions without knowing the people's ID but you can't find them with their name alone or email.
Seriously, why be so cryptic?
All the number does is narrow down to the specific user, but we should still get a list to choose from if you don't know the number.
Is it for privacy's sake? Because you can always turn down a friend request from someone you don't know.
@The Scarlet One the feature USED to be there and they removed it because they didn't think enough people used it. Because they sure have their priorities in order, huh? Instead of adding features people want, removing features, which is always a bad thing, became important because why exactly? I never received an answer and I'm still waiting for them to re-add this feature.
I can't believe you cannot search by username or part of considering you've made this software sound like it's the best thing since sliced bread.
صحيح.
doesn't work. Tried to add someone but it said I couldn't.
I can't say I like or Dislike this setup yet being I have not been able to even use it yet. Discord was referred to me by some friends that use it but but they did not give me there Tag #, so now I have to email them wait on a response to get there Tag # so I have discord download installed and it is useless till they get back with me to provide a " Tag # " Wow. I think Discord has a lot of potential but this search system for finding friends is a "Brick" maybe you should request a DNA sample or there SS# or something, that is how useless or unfriendly the search system is. Good luck with this, but till then I think Discord is a great idea that is stuck on the ground floor and could end up in the crapper with a search system layout like this.
I just joined today so I could talk to my friends outside of school. I know little to nothing about this website and I don't know what my friends' digits/numbers are but I think I know their usernames? help???
Is there a way to find a friend without the discord tag? i resently was banned from the only place me and my friend talked and never got the discord tag. PLEASE HELP!!! :(
Wish I could quickly send a link to my profile for my friend, but no I can't. Seriously what is this the early 2000s? Almost every major messaging app has a way of sharing profile links, if not then they always have the option of searching username without having to be so specific. Case sensitive, hashtag and 4 digits? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen, there is options to reject and block other users so security is no excuse. It's 2017, people want to add their friends and the app hasn't improved or changed to allow users to do so. Back to Skype for me then.
