Same here, I just launch the desktop version whenever I need to get into a call, sadly all my friends keep using it.
Pretty sad, used to be an amazing software since it was really light to run and more comfy than teamspeak for example.

i definitely need this, my laptop only have a dual core cpu and discord took almost 30% cpu usage when connected to a voice channel

Fact of the matter is, Discord USED TO BE "Discord LITE", it's why I started using it. But then the bloatware creep happened.

I get that they want to make profit off of it, and power to them, but the current idea blows.

Just charge for a stripped down version with no ads and no "I want to be steam when I grow up" functions. Just the chat/voice functions. And I will buy it.

That is weird indeed. Thanks for letting me know. 2 years ago I installed the stable version and never installed or reinstalled anything, only letting it update. I never applied for a experimental/beta version or aything.
What is also weird is that some of my friends are (like I said) experiencing the same.
I have discord on my laptop that is about 3 years old, it has an i7 6500u. I too have Discord on my desktop, that has an i7 7700k. I'm only experiencing these "problems" on my laptop. I might just try to reinstall Discord. I'll post something with the results.

I also have a old phone with Android 4.0 and 512MB of RAM. Would be cool if I could be able to chat with people on it.

Does anyone know which audio codec Discord uses? Is it Opus?

If you go into the Voice & Video section of your settings on Discord and scroll down a bit, it says "Discord uses only the best organic locally-sourced Opus Voice codec." So yes, it does :)

Please check that you dont have Hardware Acceleration (found under Settings>Appearance>Advanced) turned on, that could be what is causing your problem

    Discord needs to slim down.

It never dumps its cache from whatever it downloaded in the past, and so on one system and on my phone I have Discord take up between 1-2 GB of drive space ... even though everything but the last page on any server or any channel is wasted. 99% of the time I do not scroll up.

RAM use is going through the roof. Just got a new laptop, installed a couple meters to keep an eye on ram, cpu, etc ... Discord by default using 802 MB of RAM ?!
    Seriously: W H Y ?!

What the heck is going on that a chat app viewer now approaches 1 GIGABYTE of RAM right off the bat?

Yes please. I just uninstalled Discord from my computer cause it makes every game I play lag a bit, and make all voices robotic and impossible to understand.

    Compare discord and telegram.
Tg client uses 10x less Ram and much less Cpu time.

So yeah, we need discord lite!

I'd love to get one, it was so great to use when it was new on the market. Was pretty simple and direct, barely used any RAM so I instantly swapped to it from my old Skype. As the time passed it got so many new stuff, of course it is awesome and great and it works fine but for a second plan software isn't worth for me, even though I don't use any of it, dispite it being optional it still made the soft runs slow, I have friends that need to close discord and use in-game voice-chat cuz of FPS problems :/
     LITE VERSION, PLEASE!

Just checked on my laptop ... discord = 599 MB of RAM ?!

No chats, no game, no extra app goodies, nada ...

For the a modern version of MIRC back in the day, where you can click servers, hop into channels, ... and it is one TEXT channel at a time, with maybe one or two pictures in the view port at a time.

Why is this taking so much RAM?

same for me i didn't do anything but discord uses alone 800mb of ram.
i disabled now the game activity tab and the feed just to get a smoother experience....
also why discord not use a 64 bit client is still out of my mind -.-*

If discord wants to rise funds for keeping up the servers we gladly watch the ad for it but if its gonna ruin our gaming and make it lag then... at least make a pro version so we could buy or a lite version so we could play without lags

I have a dual core processor, and noticed that in mid 2018 discord started to consume more resources, and I barely hear what the people are talking.
Discord definitely needs a LITE version.

They either need a LITE version, or they need to add options to disable things we don't use. Like disabling the store page, things like that. I am using a Surface Pro 3, and sitting IDLE with discord open makes the fan kick on. People saying "use the browser version" are annoying because it's harder and slower to navigate via the browser. The actual discord app works better for right clicking to delete or get things you need, where in the browser you can't. We need a LITE version that is just a basic text and talk app. PLEASE DISCORD.

The bloat is the main reason I hate Discord. A bunch of chat rooms should never use this much RAM and CPU. It's ridiculous that it even needs a splash screen.
