Make users be able to use special characters, such as @ in their usernames

My nickname is Y@Quake, and I have been using this nickname for over 7 years now. I made my discord account 3 years ago and have had this nickname since then. When I try to upload a profile picture it prompts me to change my username. I would really appreciate it if I was able to change my profile picture without requiring me to change my name. And I really think that users should be able to use special characters in their usernames if it has problems while trying to tag someone you guys can make it so only the first character must be a letter or number, or something like that. Because I really find it a shame that this feature has been disabled.

    You can already do special characters, and in some cases it is infuriating. no thanks.

    I'm guessing all of the downvotes are related to fear of people making cryptic names that are difficult to work with. But the at-symbol (@) and period in particular are important for the common practice of using one's email as a username. This should be supported.

    Supporting emails as usernames is a distinct issue... It has some overlap, but includes different considerations such as length. And/or whether to require that emails as usernames match (perhaps automatically) the actual verified email. So, I'm going to try to get that in as a different issue if I can't find it already here.
