This would be great for our office as well since we like to group database updates into one message

Please add a setting to adjust the limit! It's so annoying having to cut and then recut your message because you don't know exactly when it stops fitting.

This is really important! I'm so excited for a potential increase, whether it's to 5k or 20k, but I'm definitely agreeing with the high hopes : )

Plx have mercy on us, Discord. I run face first into the character limit on a regular basis.

Same, Suiqune. My face was broken eons ago from the constant impromptu meetings with the limit, which is not the sky.

I agree, character limits should definitely be increased to something like 20,000; however, I feel that 200 for nicknames is a bit excessive. Maybe just double it (64 characters)?

I'm also having an issue with this. I run a private ttrpg server of just myself and about a dozen and a half friends, so spam isn't an issue here. I wanted to post the rules we'll be using and examples of such in a message where my players could scroll up to see them instead of going to google docs or downloading a text file or whatever other workaround exists. After shortening it as best as I could, running the web-based tools through tinyurl, sacrificing formatting, it still had to be put into two messages at more than 1900 characters each. Not a problem for rules because no one is interested in reading them as soon as they're posted. However if I were to post a campaign intro, we're now talking I either have to go with an immensely watered down version or hope that in my five or more posts I don't have an eager player jump the gun and interrupt the flow of the story.

I assume the Discord staff know memory unit conversions so the following is for everyone else. ASCII characters take up a pathetically small amount of data (8 bits per), as a Nitro user I can upload files up to 50 megabytes (8 megabytes for the non-Nitro users). 8 bits = 1 byte. 1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte. 1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte. So my 50MB file is 419,430,400 bits. For non-Nitro users with their 8MB files this is 67,108,864 bits. My 2000 character message in ASCII at 8 bits per character? 16000 bits. 1/26215th of my Nitro file and 1/4195th of a non-Nitro file. The ASCII character equivalent of either file is 52,428,800 characters for Nitro and 8,388,608. That's not including whatever other encoding and data is appended onto the text messages (but I assume that encoding is also added to the file uploads as well). Of course while everyone sending 52 million or 8 million letter long messages is absurd, the amount of people that would be sending messages over, say, 20,000 characters is insignificant compared to the total of 130 million users (from May 15, 2018).

At this point I really don't care if I need to pay for a "Nitro" server to get an increased character limit on it but I feel there needs to be a way to increase the character limit, even if it's just a control panel toggle for roles. I realize this is a niche issue, but what is the reason that there isn't a server setting for character limits?

edit: this message wouldn't fit in a single post, it's 2310 characters before this edit.

I am also continually at war with the 2000 character limit.

Making announcements as a Server Admin is rather frustrating when longer messages and posts need to be broken up into chunks so they can be released, and then must be posted in quick succession.

I wholly agree that it would be useful to have the ability to assign the higher limit via permissions rather than having it be a blanket hand-out to all users as you can guarantee it will get abused gratuitously.

My other frustration is that the 2000 character count is often inaccurate... so if that could be fixed at least, that'd be great.

    Username,

Maybe it is a bit excessive to some people but I know a lot of people (including myself) that like the idea of being able to have silly longer nicknames and we can't really do that. Keep in mind that Discord includes spaces as characters.

    Timothysboxers,

I definitely feel that. I think the main reason it's often inaccurate is because it counts spaces as characters, but I could be wrong. If it's inconsistently inaccurate that would be.... very irritating.

I find the only way to reasonably do longer messages is to put it all into google docs, section it to appropriate length, and then post it in rapidly which is a hugely annoying process and very unreliable, especially if you're posting in a channel other people can post in. Ugh.

I also really agree with the idea that we could section off who can and can't type that much. Being able to limit it to people of importance / trusted individuals will also help lessen the strain on Discord's servers.

    Trusty McCoolGirl,

While it irks me, I hadn't bothered testing it.

For the sake of science, I did just carry out a few scenarios and what I can advise is that Discord seems to count the end of line/paragraph mark as a character (where word/gdocs do not—though they do show character count with and without spaces). A space is a character, so I had expected that to be included in the count. Technically speaking, so is the end of paragraph mark, and if you really want to get into it, it could count for two characters: Carriage return and Line feed.

So in a situation where you are posting multi-paragraph messages or attempting to do a nicely formatted post, this will eat into the character count that you have available to use. So, if you—like most of us do—use word or gdocs to prepare posts, then the difference in the manner in which characters are counted may lead to you having a bad time.

I feel less annoyed about it now and modify my earlier complaint about it being inaccurate—downgrading it to merely being inconsistent with typical methods for character counting via word or gdocs.

    Timothysboxers,

Ugh. No wonder... I think I suspected something of the like, but that doesn't make it any less irritating that we have even fewer characters than we thought. The fact that we really, functionally, only have a fraction of that bothers me so much even if it's more reasonable than what we were thinking re: inconsistent numbers. If someone says that there are 2000 characters available, they should mean 2000 non-space or non-invisible characters such as letters, punctuation marks, symbols, numbers, etc.

The introductory (or original) post for this thread is exactly 2055 with spaces, 2018 if the note is removed (I believe there was a slight miscalculation there) but regardless the fact that you can't even fit that much into a single post really hurts. There are just so many hurdles to run through because of that. I really hope that the Discord Staff Team sees this thread and decides to up the limit for certain people, or just to increase it a teensy bit for everyone. Even a little would be so nice because it all adds up and could help cut down on how many posts we have to make for a single message. (I'd still love the 20,000 limit but I'm not about to assume that we'll get that much; I don't know the inner workings of Discord well enough to state whether it'd be feasible.)

It would be a great idea.

My bot has to include many hyperlinks in embed descriptions, but the 2048 characters limit is really annoying. Splitting the text into more messages cause the bot hitting the rateo limit (5 messages / 5 seconds), that's even more uncool.

Come on Discord, make this possible! I would even purchase Nitro just for that.

Can't agree more. I have been roleplaying on discord since before the limit, which was great. But suddenly it changed and it is immensely frustrating. I can understand a limit, but 2k characters is not a lot. I can see where you might want to have some sort of limit to prevent spammers (although, admittedly, I have never come across any), but it should either be larger or there should be an option to turn it off in certain channels if you are an administer. A combination of both would be divine. Everyone I talk to agrees wholeheartedly with this and finds the limit to be an issue. This isn't just 2-3 people, but literally dozens that I have talked to personally and roleplayed with.

I agree. This is ridiculous, it's like telling you "don't write too much, don't THINK too much for that matter". What about the relics among us who are not satisfied by communication with friends that comprises of 2 words per line and want to exchange valuable information from time to time? So you write your thoughts for like 5-10 minutes, whatever, and at some point the client hits a limit and won't write any more characters. Fine, you delete the last incomplete sentence and hit enter. Should work, right? EEEK, WRONG. Because you've exceeded the character limit of petty 2000 waaaaaaay back, but nothing in the program bothered to inform you of that. If the developers are so keen on the character limit (although it's ridiculous), at least they could add a character count so that we can effin *know* where that limit is and when we've crossed it. Though to be honest, it isn't their job to determine how I'm going to communicate with my friends and whether it's nice of me to write walls of text to them or not. I write long. Many people write long, and that should NOT be discouraged, because it's often a matter of intelligence. For the record, none of my friends has ever complained.

I'd love a 10k or 20k limit over the 2k limit we have currently. I'm a writer, and a seller, and I find myself writing over the limit at least twice a day. It becomes very annoying to have to split my messages up every day.

I feel like 200 would be excessive to some extent but even if it were bumped to 50 to 100 or so words would be really nice. And an increased limit on posts would certainly be appreciated, especially if you're typing up an "essay" only for it to be denied as it was too long.

At the very least, block us from adding text over the limit, or even break it up for us...
Mark the limit, or something rather than just, "You did it wrong."

What I think would be a helpful solution to the 2,000 character limit would be a toggle in settings for the server. If the admins of the server don't want it on, they can turn it off. If they do, they can leave it on. Have it auto-enabled, or auto-disabled when a new server is created. Or make it even more specific than that and have it be specific to channels or sections--some customization would be really nice because not everyone uses Discord for gaming chat.

I absolutely agree! Mine is the same, and we have the same problem. We're constantly having to split our replies into more than one message so as to stay within the character limit, and it's frustrating. If the admin had the option to choose whether to enforce a character limit and/or how much the character limit was, that would be awesome. Thanks!

If your hitting a two thousand character limit, your doing something VERY wrong. It is not normal for a post to be even 300 characters normally, and ive only ever hit the 2k limit when copy-pasting. If you really need longer limits, you should use an external thing, such as pastebin or hastebin.

@Leotomas -- I don't think you fully understood what was going on. Some of us use Discord for text-based role play. That means we're writing stories, and a part of a story can easily get up to 2000k characters. I had a look at pastebin to see what it was about, and it doesn't seem to be what we want. The point of using Discord for us is for the chat feature, among other things, a feature that pastebin doesn't have. I also use Google Docs with my friend from Discord, and that works, but for various reasons, including the fact that Google Docs doesn't work very well on either of our phones, we prefer Discord for some scenarios. Please don't tell us we're doing things wrong just because we're using Discord differently than you do.

ok if you hit 2k it's whaever but if you're hitting 2000k then there's a problem

To the extent of my understanding, this is a technical thing, and is in place for the same reason you can only upload 50/100 emotes: server overload. Any longer and it becomes a big burden on the servers to keep messages that long. (correct me if i'm wrong btw, i don't actually know)

Oh, okay. That's entirely possible :) I mean I don't know enough about it to understand why 2 1000k-character messages are different than 1 2000k-character message, but yeah haha. Thanks for saying that! I would like to hear from Discord themselves whether that's the case, but it seems to me like it's entirely possible you're right haha
